I grew up watching the TWILIGHT ZONE, and every New Year's Day it seems their is a marathon for about 3-4 days. My tv is on, I never turn it off during that time. I so glad his daughter decided to write this book, being a "huge fan" of his it was amazing to find that he had his hands in so many other pots. i.e. SEVEN DAYS IN MAY, J.F.K.'s funeral information for the radio etc. Also, JAQUES COUSTEAU and his show and so much more. He always came across to me as a gentle man, you could tell by his eyes (windows to the soul.) Beautifully written book, you're so very lucky to have those wonderful memories to look back on. I'm sure you get this a lot, but my favorites were "THE MASKS," "NIGHT OF THE MEEK," and "TO SERVE MAN!." EXCELLENT READ (one afternoon) ðŸ˜
AS I KNEW HIM: MY DAD, ROD SERLING is that rare hybrid of a book that succeeds magnificently as both memoir and biography. Because Anne Serling gives us not just an utterly human story of her own close relationship with her father, but also perhaps the most revealing and, again, oh-so-human portrait yet written of her dad as both a man and an extremely gifted writer and student of the human condition, who fought his whole life against racism and bigotry, and this was often reflected in his writing.Anne Serling's book is filled with the wit, wisdom and humor of her father, both from his TV and movie scripts, and from family anecdotes and stories that she shares. We also get a very close and detailed look at his childhood and adolescence, his WWII service as a paratrooper, his college years at Antioch College, where he met his wife, Carol. And then his rapid rise into the top tier of TV and film writers. I found myself constantly dog-earing pages of Serling sayings and bits and pieces from his hundreds of scripts. But I've decided not to share them here. Because, if you were a fan of The Twilight Zone or Night Gallery, as I was, then you know just how effective he was as a dramatist.Serling was only fifty when he died of heart problems, but man, did he pack a lot of living into those fifty years. A workaholic of sorts, he left a lasting legacy - in all those TV shows and screenplays, and also, I suspect, in the students he taught at various colleges later in his career. But I think what affected me the most deeply was Anne's own story of the devastating grief and sense of loss she felt at losing her father. She was just twenty when he died, and it took her years to get over it - if indeed you ever do get over that kind of personal loss. The final chapters are wrenchingly sad, and will most certainly hit home with anyone who has lost a beloved parent, whether they were twenty or seventy when it happened. I was sixty-nine when my mother died, at 96. I wept at reading of Anne's difficulties in coping with this grievous loss. It's never easy.Serling bore scars, both physical and psychological, from the war, and I thought often of the many books, both fiction and memoir, currently coming out of today's wars as I read of his early attempts at writing, especially when he said -"I was bitter about everything and at loose ends when I got out of the service. I think I turned to writing to get it off my chest ... Shrapnel wounds and mangled, bullet ridden bodies are not the only casualties of war. There are casualties of the mind. Every war produces a backwash, a residue of pain and grief."AS I KNEW HIM is, quite simply, a beautiful book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Bravo, Ms. Serling. Your dad would be so proud.- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER
This is one of the most personal, Looking over someone's shoulder into their life type of memoirs that I have ever read. I read it in practically one sitting it amazed me that anyone could share such personal feelings when it had been so difficult to even get to those feelings in the first place. I knew that it was going to be good I just didn't know how deeply it would affect me. And Serling is so brave so very brave to have gone back to the place of real pain yet exquisite joy that she knows that she will never have again And she not only has dug into her own pain and joy but also those of her father and has shared all of that with us. I feel so honored that she has allowed us to take a peek inside the time that she had not only with father and her friends or family ,people who were important to her. This book will be read over and over again I know that every time I read it I will gain something from it and so I thank her for that.
I met Anne Serling at a convention in Salt Lake City and thumbed through her book. It looked intriguing but I was on a budget at the time so couldn't afford it.I recently found this on Kindle and bought it. The narrative was one of the most powerful biographies I have read in some time. It was personal, informative, and above all, authentic. How many books have you read where you can't remember anything about it six months later? The ideas of this book will stick with me and I found myself discussing aspects of it with my wife and daughter. Here are a few highlights (that in no way spoil the basic narrative): Serling was a combat veteran who fought in the Pacific in WWll and received a bronze star and purple heart (his injuries included shrapnel in his knee and eye). He had over forty rejections for his short stories before he connected as a writer, he was a happy, well-adjusted family man (despite suffering from war-related PTSD), and he had a daughter who adored him. There are many more aspects of his life and career and the author fills in the canvas with a variety of sources including correspondence from friends and family. I read this book because I was interested in the lives of creative people. But I was rewarded well beyond that simple requirement. I wish I would have gotten an autographed book those many years ago.
This book is a biography of Rod Serling written by his younger daughter, Anne Serling. This book was clearly a labor of love for his daughter (and a kind of grief therapy for her as well). I’m sure Rod Serling would have been very proud of the book she has written. The book is much more about the man than about the screenplays he wrote. Since the author was his daughter, that was certainly to be expected. And I thought it was nice to be able to know more about the man who presented that Twilight Zone episode each week. Still, the book weaves in numerous references to his screenplays and select Twilight Zone episodes (no doubt because she understood that most readers only knew of him through the stories he wrote). I was especially interested to learn his motivation for the Twilight Zone series – to write the kind of morality-oriented stories he wanted to write while still being able to avoid a constant battle with the many forms of network censorship.
